So here is the thing my friends….the last few weeks I have been gone. You got it right, the previous three entires for this illustrious blog I wrote ahead of time, focusing on some subjects that would have been good for anyone to follow in regards to their personal fitness. During that time, I was driving from Tucson to Austin, Texas in the dead of night, making some excellent time in the process and sampling bad dime store coffee in the middle nowhere. I spent a week in Austin and then traveled to Denver, Colorado, making a nice little trip to the Rocky Mountains and barely escaping the traffic that was on its way to Wyoming to check out the totality of the eclipse (remember that? haha!). The best assessment I ever heard about going on vacation is this… “You go to another city to eat all of the same food that is served in your city, but loving the fact you are not eating in your city.” Something to that degree. For me, actually going on a vacation by myself was a bit scary. I had s many questions stuck in my head. Will I blow my budget? (Yes!) Will I be surprised by gas prices? (Yes!) Do cops dare you to speed? (a big Yes!). When so many of us go on vacation, we cut loose and add that vacation gut that has plagued so many before because it’s face it, we rarely have time to really make our food and most hotels barely have a functioning microwave. Well, I refuse to be like that. One thing that can be a real downer is getting sick while on vacation or having issues with your health due to the fact you never really took care of yourself. Either way, I had a plan when going on my trip, and I made sure to follow through with it. Sure, I was going to eat a lot of food on the trip, especially in Austin due to the wide variety of vegan food that was available to me. However, I knew I could not be the guy that just drinks and eat the whole damn time. That is just not me to begin with. So why should you work out (or at least make an attempt to work out) while you are enjoying your time away from your city of choice and such? Well, why do you work out in the first place? You do it to maintain a picture of health and a routine that makes you proud. Disrupting that procedure can force you to lose a little momentum. Either way, the idea of working out while on vacation has become such a big thing, that hotel sites are starting to get on board with advertising these aspects of vacation life. http://www.travelandleisure.com/articles/best-hotel-fitness-offerings-how-to-work-out-on-vacation Hotels in general are also upping the ante, providing better equipment in many cases as well as—gasp!—workout programs that are tailored for their respective equipment set-up. Seriously, my idea of a good vacation is not all about stuffing my face.
Now of course, there is not something everyone is up for. When most vacation, they can control themselves and not go to overboard. But for someone like me—someone with an eating problem—this is not really the case. So figuring out ways to keep yourself in shape is important. So how do you do this when in a big city and not at your usual gym? You lie. You lie a lot!! I started in Austin, calling up Gold’s Gym and making some cockamamie claim that I just moved into town and was looking for a good gym to work out at. I buttered up the sales rep a little by saying his particular gym was better than the one that was actually closer to my friend’s place, mainly because I preferred the parking situation over the fact of being in downtown Austin (which was the truth…parking in downtown Austin is a nightmare). Anyway, I was able to get a three day pass to the gym and managed to make the most of it. During the time in Austin I worked on my olympic lifts and also did some good kettle bell work in the process. One thing that absolutely made my day was the fact they had an indoor track on the facility, and they said it as okay for me to flip a giant tire around the entire track. Needless to say, flipping a tire for 120 meters or so is not fun. I also got some good work done with my back squat, setting in motion some new exercise to help with my posture and to help with my ability. It was rewarding and worked up such a hunger that I was able to scarf down two vegan friendly wraps from Conscious Cravings and not feel guilty about it. I also realized that Tucson is seriously falling behind in the whole corporate gym lifestyle. I mean, most of the places in town don’t even have free weight platforms, which would make it impossible for someone like myself to really work on some specific lifts. So yes, that can be one benefit of seeing the world! Now in Denver, I did kind of the same ruse at a place called Lifetime Fitness, which was nothing short of a mecca for fitness and health. While I am sure it would have been extremely expensive to actually work out there, it would not have been such a bad price when you consider the lay-out. Tons of equipment, tons of olympic platforms and a boatload of free weights. They also had areas where you could get your High Intensity Interval Training done as well as multiple classes for everyone. I was in awe of this place and was glad I was introduced to it by my sister. The only downside of working out there…man I looked completely out of shape in that place. While I held my own with my weights and effort, this was the only time I really felt bad during my trip, primarily because I felt like I was not working hard enough to achieve my goals. I tried eating pretty darn healthy while I was in Denver with my family, helping with the cooking and helping dictate the menu on several occasions. I only had one day where I went a little crazy, eating all day and meeting up with a lot of good vegans in Denver. While I did gain about three pounds from my trip, it could have been a lot worse if I had not worked out at all and just stuffed my face the entire time.
Now of course, some of you might not be as prone to fibbing quite as much as I am, so pulling this off took a little bit of work on my part mainly because I hate telling lies. On the other hand, it really helped me stay on task and not fall too far behind. You don’t necessarily have to use full workout equipment and tell half truths to gym sales people, for you can do the basics as well. Push-ups, sit-ups, crunches and a great many other exercises can be used at your disposal. You can simply walk everywhere rather than drive or take ride share. And of course, much like what I did in Denver, I took advantage of the local scenery and did a little hiking. Heck, on the first I was in Texas, I was stuck in Fredrickburg, having made too good of a time to Texas and decided to churn out a little two-mile run despite having driven the whole night and having very little food in my system (not to mention the humidity was about 60%!). I walked consistently during my time in both cities, for I was trying to stay active. I also did this because the guest passes I got only lasted for three days. Anyway, never take your fitness for granted, for you could be just like me and really struggle to get back into the groove of things.
