Other than having to deal with a lot of people that don’t know how to use the extremely expensive equipment they have signed their lives away to obtain, my job isn’t too bad for the most part. One way the higher ups try to curry favor amongst the working staff is to get really pass happy on the weekends, and by that I mean they love to give us freebies. One weekend we got not just one, but two nice sports cups that I really haven’t used yet. Yesterday, we got a rather nice lunch bag that I can actually use and actually will use in the interim. This thing is so cool, it actually has a couple of holders that I assume you can put sodas in. Predictably, the energy drink guzzling sector of the company was going nuts over this, happy as clams knowing they have a bag that caters to their specific needs. It was definitely a nice little gesture, for it is something that is actually usable as opposed to the other things they tend to hand out much of the time. What I mean by that is the horrible food they hand out on a regular basis. Now, fortunately for me, the stuff they hand is pretty much some of the most vegan unfriendly “food” you can actually imagine and therefore have not been tempted. A couple weeks ago, they had a barbecue for everyone and they used some of the cheapest looking meat and cheese you can imagine. Granted, it was free, but it did not look that appetizing. They then offered us massive sandwiches last week from Basha’s complete with a soda and a dairy infused bag of chips of your choice (the Doritos was the popular one). They also handed out candy and ice cream bars that weekend as well. It was even worse yesterday, where we not only had sandwiches and cookies form a local sandwich shop here in town, they also handed boatloads of candy. Fortunately for one of my co-workers, he got all the candy I didn’t want and another co-worker deftly asked me for my sandwich and cookie (it was a roast beef sandwich by the way, which used to be my favorite meat) which I had no problem giving to her since I was technically given one for the day. Now I am an old grump about all of this and I will admit that, but man my job is really good at enabling bad eating habits. It’s not enough that they keep the energy drink/soda/sports drink cooler stocked to the gills every day (they have to refill it twice a day) but they tend to give out a lot of sweets and junk food. I mean, I used to like Mexican pasties as much as the next guy back in the day, but c’mon people. For some people, resisting these temptations would be a tough chore to manage, especially since free food is free food. But it is the discipline toward this temptation that you will need.
I will admit, I was not perfect yesterday. My toe was bothering me due to a persistent blister that does not want to go away and I did steal a couple little bags of the Lays plain potato chips that some people didn’t want (probably wanted Doritos). I maybe ate too much pasta last night and blew off my run due to my foot, and then had a couple beers which will ultimately help me with my sleep. I wasn’t perfect by any means, but on the other hand, I didn’t eat any candy or sweets and with the exception of the Lays, I pretty much ate real food yesterday (had beans and tortillas for breakfast and then some greens and apples for lunch). I can probably get away with saying yesterday was a cheat day, and I will go ahead and stand by that mantra. But I was guilty of slipping, and it will probably affect me for the next couple days. It’s been kind of funny, I have been eating a lot lately, keeping a consistent eating schedule and a fairly well rounded regimen (with the exception of Mondo Monday’s at The Loft, where I will eat some mother loving’ Frybread!). Now I have gained six pounds since the last time I weighed myself a few months ago, but on the other hand, it was a happy surprise since the scales at the plasma donation place keep saying I am well north of 250. Don’t know how so many scales can be so poorly calibrated, but who cares. Needless to say, it is not like my body has become more bulbous in the meantime, for I think my dogs have put on more pounds than I have as they are getting ready for the winter months and the days of snuggling with me at night. I look a little leaner around the stomach these days, but it might be just positive reception in regards to the way I see myself. Either way, I know my arms are getting stronger, so the weight gain might be going to my guns and my chest as the slowly but surely become a little tighter each day. I guess the push-ups are doing their job, which is making it much better for me in regards to my fitness.
I will commend my job for doing one thing—at least they are trying to make you happy in spite of the heavy demands and the stress of the job for such low pay. But like I keep saying, it is just not something I really want to get into. Snacks and candy just aren’t the best way to win me over. The best way to get me on their side is give me an hour lunch so I can take the occasional foray to the nearby Chipotle. Now, I have gone over many times the idea of a good work balance and life balance, and I have to tell you, this place doesn’t seem to be balanced very well. People pushing long hours and of course, all of the worst food you can imagine at your disposal (one of the most unhealthy food trucks on record shows up every week). I’ll admit, it is not all roses and dandelions, such as what happened earlier this week when I got so flustered that I had to literally beat my body into a pulp to kind of get over some of the madness at work. Of course, I am not necessarily handling my balance all that well these days due to the newer stresses being brought about, but I will adjust soon enough and recover. But for far too many people, they let the rigors of work get to them. http://www.medicalnewstoday.com/articles/313755.php This used to happen at my old job, where I would log in 36 hours of back breaking work over the span of 60 hours. These days present a different challenge for me, where I sit down much of the time. Fortunately, I have the good habit of standing and stretching a lot in between calls, and this is how I know I am maintaining a good weight because I can actually do lunges in my jeans. This past weekend aside, I feel I am getting a good schedule on my back. With me resetting some other things in life, the ultimate goal of getting a new car and even moving out of town might actually come to fruition!
That is something way down the road, but let’s focus on life right now. I have been getting stronger lately, and the main reason is certainly not because of the amount of time I am spending in the gym. I’ve actually been spending less time, getting in to Parsons a mere two times a week. This is why I am going back to some heavier weights, once again adjusting my regimen to account for the fact I am losing a day of working out. But it has been okay on my part, for I am adding more stuff to my workout regimen and taking advantage of the time I have by not dilly dallying around. Not only am I throwing in overhead barbell squats into every workout, I am making sure I push everything to the max. Like I said, I want to keep the momentum I have going in my life, and staying on top of my life. If you can believe it, in spite of cleaning my diet up quite a bit, I have managed to get rid of one little detail in my life. I have not made any potatoes for nearly a month. I know, the guy that wanted to eat potatoes forever has been very reluctant to eat the stuff. I will admit, I have had some potato samosas from Whole Foods a couple times, but on the other hand, I have not been making any of those delicious ground gourds. If you can believe it, exchanging those for greens and fruits has been a good swap for me. So while I no longer have an indelible staple in my life, I have managed to maintain my strength and fitness in spite of the loss.
Now I will not start a smear campaign against potatoes, but I think it just means I was eating way too much starch, which can hinder you in some cases. Now of course, potatoes saved my life, but it was a pretty good idea for me to cut back on them for the time being. I think the biggest issue was the fact I was eating various sauces and oils with it. Without those temptations, not having them in my life has been a bit of a surprise. I won’t give up on the potatoes of course, but hey, I have kind of kicked my habit. I don’t doubt the nutritional content of potatoes, but there can be some draw backs. http://healthyeating.sfgate.com/bad-starches-medically-1995.html I think the thing that was affecting me the most might have been the high carbohydrate figures, and I have mentioned many times over the predisposition I have to diabetes due to the fact it runs so rampant in my family. Of course, I will not blame anything on that detail, it is just worth noting that the potatoes probably made me a little more acidic due to the carbs. Eating greens every day and putting cinnamon on just about all of my fruit has been good for me.
Now of course, this past week notwithstanding, I have managed to keep on the same track I have been on for the last three months. Next week everything will be normalized for me and the progress I was demanding from myself will be rectified. Now if you follow me on social media and such, you will probably be wondering how in the world I am not staying consistent, at least to my standards? Well, while I maintained this past week while dealing with a topsy turvy, stressed filled schedule, I did manage to do some form of fitness every day, even if it was just the push-up challenge I continue to put myself through. By the way, I am on day 59 today and for the first time in a long time, I am starting to get really sore from the constant push-ups. Someone actually gave me a little heck for not going deep enough, but on the other hand, I am still doing this every day and cranking out my best effort. I have little time for people that troll rather than do. What I am saying is this…I haven’t stopped. I have not taken too many days off in they fitness journey lately, and while I did gain those few pounds, I still feel pretty good about what I am doing. Truthfully, that is the toughest part for me in regards to staying consistent in my work life and workout life. Just doing something every day, despite having no television and no comfort foods in the house, is still the one thing I have to fight every day. Truthfully, I am winning once again even if the gains might only be in my mind.
So like I will always say, keep going and make the time for this life no matter what. Even if it is a step back from what you normally, you have to keep your body moving and keep it working. Trust me, there has been times where I stopped doing stuff for a couple days and I payed for it with some lackluster efforts in the gym. So just keep working out, and good things will happen. Eventually this stomach will go away. haha!!! This year, with some massive changes in the fitness and eating program, the are back to performing near the top of the league like they normally do. This just goes to show what happens when you don’t keep to the regimen you originally set out for yourself. Now if only my New York Giants can take a cue from that book.
