I woke up to some rather glorious news on Friday, the kind of news that would make me actually have a good day. Apparently, after years of rumors and a spike in activity over the last couple weeks, a Mega Man movie might actually come to fruition! You see, for so many years, Capcom, the company that owns Mega Man, has been reluctant to do anything with their game properties. Ever since the horrible Street Fighter movie, they were kind of gunshy, and for good reason. Not a good moment for anyone involved in that piece of trash, especially Jean-Claude Van Damme. Growing up, Capcom had a lot of great properties outside of Mega Man, including the epic Disney games like Darkwing Duck, Chip and Dale’s Rescue Rangers and Ducktales. But Mega Man was always the king, mainly because it brought an interesting take on the idea of gaming, where you didn’t have to follow a set flow of levels and be able to choose your own. Granted, Mega Man 2 was really the beginning of the series (at least from a player’s perspective), the entire series turned into some good fun. I pretty much played them all, from all 10 of the original Mega Man games to the eight Mega Man X games that were an offshoot series designed for higher gaming systems. Then you had other games, like Mega Man Racer, Mega Man Legends and even a Mega Man character in some of the Street Fighter games (primarily Marvel vs. Capcom). They even had a Mega Man soccer game, which was actually pretty darn fun to play (though insanely easy to win!). Now I am not a huge fan of the Mario Brothers or even Link from Zelda, so this made me insanely happy to hear some people will finally take a crack at the franchise. And why not!? It’s got some 200 games in the canon! I’m sure Jon is gonna give me a little heck like he normally does, for he was a Sega kid growing up and fell in love with the lazily rendered Sonic. We have gotten into several nerdy arguments on the subject, with Mega Man coming out on top every time. To think, he has the audacity to claim Sonic is better than Mega Man. As if! The “Blue Bomber” had an assortment of weapons unlike any other, from black hole devices, gear projectiles, bombs, and even a time stopper! Not to mention he had jet packs, submarines and force fields! All that little blue ball of nothing from the Sega universe did was just roll around! Sure, Mega Man had some bizarrely bad weapons, like bubbles, snakes and leaves, but you try coming up with eight unique weapons on the fly!
Anyway, it is time for me to whip out some old ideas, since I’m going to try and incept my idea of a Mega Man movie out into the ether. I always imagined a sort of Robocop kind of scenario, where Mega Man lost all his body parts in a horrific attack, but had all his body parts replaced by bionic components that allowed him to morph his hand into a cannon. Of course, this would stray from the story where Mega Man was a straight sentient A.I., but how often do video game movies stick to the source material? Especially in this day and age? Resident Evil? House of a The Dead? Silent Hill (a travesty of film making!)? Super Mario Brothers? Personally, I hope this compels some people to actually try and make a movie version of Metal Gear, which is an incredibly cool idea, far superior to that of the insanely dull Halo series. Geez, I have really gone off track here. This is supposed to be a blog about health and fitness and such, and here I am rambling on like a standard Reddit user that doesn’t realize no one reads his posts about “Post-Feminism in the Fat Shaming Movement” or “Which Grapefruit Shandy Will Get You Lit Up Fastest” (yes, grapefruit beer is a thing this year, much like peach was last year). But I am excited to hear this, for I rarely get excited about anything like this. Sure, some intrepid Japanese film makers made their own Mega Man movie a few years back, but it is horribly bad. I mean less than straight to video bad. Not even good enough to make the cheap bin at Walmart or Walgreens (which oddly have a lot of Dorf on Golf and Sharknado videos).
Anyway, where was I? Oh yes, talking about health and fitness and junk. How does one even think about health and fitness when your favorite pop culture icon in the world is finally getting some freaking praise?! Okay, got to keep it together….burpies….skunk push-ups…overhead clean presses. Okay, I’m back to Earth now. Okay, a few days ago I decided to take on a challenge for September, helping out a fellow Parsons client named Jim Porter along the way. You see, Jim has come quite a long way since he first started working out at Parsons Training, making gains in the gym that an average 60-year old man would never partake in at this point in his life. Jon likes to boasts Parsons Training boasts the strongest Computer IT guy in Tucson, well he may eventually boast the strongest engineer in Tucson as well. Jim is already barbell pressing 135 pounds. You try doing that at any age! My job at the moment is to help Jim stay on task, for he wants to maintain a strong cardio regimen that has been seriously lacking. While he does well in his weights and functional, the cardio is always the toughest. I can take some solace knowing I am not the only person that feels this way, for the nasty Tucson summer of 2015 has really had an impact on my health and my psyche. While my running and cardio has been kind of hurting, I am still doing my best to maintain. On days I don’t run, I make it a point to do some walking. Usually I would take my pups for a three-mile walk and then take myself for another three mile walk. Sure, my shirt that I would be wearing would be nothing more than a sweaty mess, it would often times be worth it because my pups tend to be better behaved when I regularly take them for walks. Seriously, I noticed they don’t go running down the street as often when I regularly walk them, for their main purpose of going for walks is marking their territory and showing off how awesome their human is, for he takes the time to specially give them a parade around the neighborhood (at least that is what I would like to think). Either way, I have taken on this challenge to help Jim lose some weight, for he is going to try and lose eight pounds this month. A threw my hat into the ring as well, seeking to get below 235 or so. There is a lot of good science to indicate doing something this can be beneficial. I’m not talking about trying to lose a certain amount of weight in a month, I’m talking about using the buddy system when it comes to your fitness goals. https://experiencelife.com/article/strength-in-numbers-the-importance-of-fitness-buddies/
Now the study this article uses is a bit old, but the findings are pretty valid. If you have someone to rely on and keep you accountable, the drop-out rate of a workout regimen can be gigantic. People that had a workout friend typically stuck with the program a good 43% of the time, while people who take the solo journey tend to stay only 6% of the time! When you look at the comparison, that is unbelievable! There is a lot of truth to this article, for I myself didn’t really want to get into this whole life altering journey without my parents. If it hadn’t been for them, I might be blissfully jumping up and down and waiting for the moment McDonald’s starts selling all day breakfast items like Jack in the Box (a game changer for McDonalds, for they are desperate to keep their clientele coming in since they are causing so many health problems for their other “regulars.” Yup, I just went there). These days, I pretty much use Jon and this blog to stay motivated and healthy, for what would I have to write about if I didn’t at least make a go on my fitness (maybe I would start a Mega Man Reddit page!).
This isn’t going to be a one-way street by any means, for Jim is actually going to keep me in check as well in this little excursion of fitness accountability. It’s already worked like a charm so far, for he kind of got on my case during the first day of the challenge on Tuesday, convincing me to go out for a run despite the heat and humidity. Plus, Jon had put me through the ringer earlier in the day, working me hard on hang clean front squats, which were pretty brutal. I managed to front squat 175 pounds, which was a weight I had never tried before. Usually I find myself doing lighter weight at that movement, typically 115 pounds when Jon feels the need to have me do 50 of them. Anyway, it was a nice little workout that involved some decent leg work. I wasn’t really thinking about running that night, but I was goaded into doing so. Since I am trying to rebuild myself after a long summer of laziness, I opted to go for at least 45 minutes after making it a point to go 30 minutes the previous week. My first time running for 45+ minutes was a pretty good run, putting in 4.59 miles and averaging 10.15 per mile. Now the humidity was pretty awful that night, which is why I was a little slow since this was Reid Park, my fast track. But it felt good for a moment in spite of the massive amount of sweat I was drenched in. Up to that point, I had not done that long of a run on any of my two-a-day workouts, so I was pretty pleased with the effort despite the slow time.
Thursday brought some different results, for I had to do another tough “Christa” workout that forced me to count down from 100. It was not something to be happy about, for the amount of work I had to put in was quite tough in the humidity of Parsons training. Plus I was still sore from Tuesday. In spite of everyone taking off early, I was allowed to stay and finish. It was kind of nice to have the place to myself, for I played music I liked and even directed the fans toward me to try and ward off some of the sweating (it didn’t work). Now I didn’t do another two-a-day. primarily for the rain that was hitting my neighborhood that night, but I made it an effort to do so the next night. Just to add some difficulty to the test, I decided to get some yard work down that day, for the weeds in my backyard were turning into a forest rather than weeds. My pups were quite angry with me when I clear cut half of their playground, for they love to go roaming in the high weeds and have some fun. I suspect Rusty liked it because it allowed him to hunt for field mice or something. Every now and then, his breath would be pretty awful when he would come inside from a little excursion outdoors (as for Scarlet, I found out she is quite the digger and his the one digging up holes in the back yard, not the rabbits….little scamp!). That night, I opted for another 45-minute run, only this time it would be at the home course. The weather was good, hovering just under 80 degrees, but the humidity was a ridiculous 70%!!! I pulled through it, anyway, finishing at a 10.11 per mile clip in spire of my home course being much more difficult.
Saturday was also a good workout day, for work was unusually busy and the humidity in the warehouse was unbelievable. Let me put it to you this way….it was so humid that my shirt was soaked five minutes in! I don’t know how many calories I burned that day, but since I filled up a truck and half with little residual pain afterward, I would say I did pretty well. Maybe a good 1,000 calories or so. While some might to consider work a real workout, Saturday was something all together different. It was a day that should haves seen two people for each truck, but instead we only got one per each. I would have to say all of us got worked pretty hard. Nonetheless, the first week of my September challenge is going well, even though I kind of went crazy on my Saturday night dinner and even drank some beers. This the time of the year for pumpkin ales, so I might as well take advantage!
