So here I was on Mother’s Day, enjoying a jackfruit sorta at a place called Even Stevens, and it made me realize a few things about my life. Being vegan will always be pretty easy for me to maintain, and differentiation is the spice of life. Checking out unfamiliar places can be a good thing when you are stuck at home a lot like myself. Going into a little restaurant that is kinda nestled into an unusual spot in Downtown Tucson, enjoying a unique atmosphere put a little spark in my life. Sure, I cannot make a habit of trying to find a whole bunch of different places to eat at all the time, but it is nice top break away from the norm. So many times in our lives, we get caught in these routines that get in the way of everything in our lives. Fitness is not privy to these problems as well, for we often times get caught in a malaise, goalless and unable to find a purpose in the fitness. We keep doing the same thing over and over and over, and then we get bored. Right now, I have had to come up with some new ideas for my fitness, mainly because I need to address the problem with left arm and its lack of steadiness. Jon put a two week moratorium on bench pressing and other stuff that might overly stress the shoulder joint. Either way, fitness is not something you should get tired of, because we all need to find things that will keep us connected to our journeys. Tucson has some good natural opportunities here in town, and let me fill you in on some of them.
THE LOOP — THE CITY SIZED ALL PURPOSE PATH
A good decade ago, the city started an ambitious project that would seek to connect the city in many unique ways. While street fixing is the biggest gripe that anyone in the city will deal with, one thing for other people like myself that was really nice was the fact the city recently completed a running/biking path that can be traversed all around the city. Yes, the sprawling metropolis that is Tucson that has a path that stretches from Twin Peaks road on the Northwest side all the way to Vail on the far east side. I saw something similar to this in Denver where they had a biking path that basically went through the center of the city and all the way to Morrison, Colorado where there is ample mountain biking and hiking opportunities. That is essentially a 25-mile bike.running path alone!! It is a nifty idea for any city that is seeking a fitness identity, for there is also something similar to this in Austin when I visited that city last year. How extensive The Loop will get is anyone’s guess, but cyclists are loving it, at least from what I have seen on the days where I walk my dogs in the morning.
JOIN A MEET-UP GROUP
There is tons of ways to meet new people that have similar workout mentalities like yourself, and the best place might be through various meet-ups groups. The cool thing about doing this is the fact most people can find something they might like for a relatively low price. Want some outdoor boot camps? How about a running group? Heck, even Parsons Training has a Barbell Club at the eastside location, and starting June 2nd a Barbell Club at both locations, where you can work on your olympic weight training. Granted, this might not be as trendy as it used to be, but hey, fitness is always “in.”
FITNESS IS IN PLACES YOU MIGHT NOT EXPECT
Okay, I went out Saturday night with some friends, and while I did have the aid of alcohol and goading, I did go and dance much of the night away and did so for maybe two hours straight. I didn’t get as sweaty as I thought so I consider that a win. While I destroyed the potential benefit of burning calories by drinking some ridiculously good drinks, the concept is the same. Doing physical activities that are not necessarily considered fitness can burn some of those calories. Tucson has a couple dance studios where you can get your ballroom dance on, and before you start talking smack, ballroom dancing when done at top speed can burn up to 300 calories in an hour. Plus you have other places like Skate Country or Get air, where simple things skating around for an hour or two or jumping around on trampolines are not only fun but also calorie burning. So yes, this is a weird proposal, but also you are mostly hanging out indoors and avoiding the outdoor heat!
HIKING AND TRAIL WALKING
Sure, just about every year we had a story here in Tucson where someone nearly dies (or actually does die) from heat exhaustion while going hiking, but these usually happen to people that don’t bring enough water and are doing said activity in the middle of a brutal 115-degree day. So don’t be that person, and if you are that person remember that the average body could sweat out a quart of fluids per hour in 100-plus degree weather. Even if you are in better shape always be weary of this. Anyway, hiking and trail walking is pretty big out here, especially in the early mornings when the weather is at its finest. https://www.visittucson.org/10-great-tucson-area-hikesIf you want to quicken the pace, please remember the water and also take the time to keep yourself fueled with some good snacks that will aid in the walk.
LAST BUT NOT LEAST…..
What do you start doing a lot more of when it gets hot….you get your butt in the pool. Now of course most of the best pools are at resorts and stuff, it might be better to look for friends that have pools and start bringing them food. Trust me, that always helps. Of course doing a mini staycation might be nice for a change of pace (unless you have kids), swimming is a good outdoor activity to get the most out oft he warm weather. Just be sure to wear that good sunblock or you might have a heck of a burn on you! Swimming in general is not only relaxing, you can also make a workout out of the situation, doing some pool based workouts or just simply swimming around for a while. The resistance will certainly help with burning any kind of calories.
