Okay, so after a week away from the game, it is only fitting to say there is some joy in my heart these days. This upcoming week should be a pretty good one for me, for a lot of fun things will be coming into fruition. First and foremost, I will be starting my changed eating regimen next week, and it is merely a matter of logistics, for I have to make a trip to the grocery store to not only get the food needed but also get some additional serving cases that will keep me in check. Now, I am excited to try this new chapter in my life not because I crave the sadism that will come form eating less food, but I do it because I need it. I certainly want to make a concerted effort to lean my body down and make myself a much more efficient operating machine. I think it will actually be fun to try and get a full shopping cart worth of food. Now this doesn’t mean I will become an insufferable bore when I start this eating regimen, but it will mean I am really trying…that I truly want to be the man I am seeking to become in the long run. Healthy, lean and capable of anything. The heavy version of myself is something I want to strictly be in the past.
Now, I am excited to tell you all about that, for I will definitely be tempted over the next few weeks when I finally implement that specific eating regimen. I know I will eventually write a blog that will display my disgust for the days where my energy is lacking, so please be ready for that one my friends. But I also feel I will write about the glory of being able to fit into smaller clothes once again, for I want to be able to walk around with a little more confidence in my life. When I really think about it, that is what I am really looking at. If anything, being able to walk with my head held high is the biggest thing I am seeking in my life. Work is getting hard for me these days—with the ever changing security policies that are adding more stress to an already stressful job—but I am adjusting to the changes. Fortunately I am not like a lot of other people at work, where they will drastically have to change everything about their work station when they come to work. I mean, we will not be allowed to have anything at our desk unless it passes the security checks. People would bring half of their home with them in some cases, and I am talking blankets and trinkets and anything under the sun. I know, who would have thought a cell phone company would have similar security measures to the TSA.
Anyway, before I think of taking over the world one cell phone account at a time, I have to go back to the reason why things are going pretty good for the upcoming week or so. First and foremost, I will be checking out an OG rock band by the name of Social Distortion next week, which will be the first time in a long time that I had been to concert. Gogol Bordello is shifting into a memory and it is now time to get a new memory into its place. It’s also a pretty good week for me in regards to movies, for one of the more anticipated films I have been wanting to see is “Ghost in the Shell.” Now before I have to defend myself against the fact I want to see my favorite gal Scarlett Johansson or critique the fact a largely asian based anime has no main asian characters, I just love science fiction films (I understand the anger, but I also like to get out of the house from time to time). Most of the time sci-fi films are bad movies morphed into superhero comic book nonsense, so to see cyber punk sci-fi in all its glory is going to be awesome. If anything, this starts off a pretty good month of movies for me, for the The Loft is showing some great cinema like Titticut Follies, 1984, Donnie Darko, The Miami Connection, Kedi, and a host of other great films from the past and the present. So yes, I have a tiresome month ahead of me. Now you may have noticed on thing about this blog…where is the fitness?
Well, I am not going to lie…I really didn’t do anything last week. While I got the previous Monday off to a great start, things just kind of fell apart from the first really good workout I had last week. I was really good during that workout as well, doing deadlift reps at 315 pounds, handling the situation like a boss. I also did a lot overhead presses, bent over rows and even some goblet squats. But that was pretty much it for the week. With the exception of the yoga session I had last Saturday night, I was pretty much down and out with my fitness. The biggest reason was the fact my family from Denver was in town, and I opted to spend some time with them in the process. Now I naturally wanted to get some good fitness in with them, show them the stuff that is really deep inside the fibers of my heart and muscle but I only had Monday to show that toughness inside me. It wasn’t because I got a little lazy, but I just prioritized the fact I wanted to spend some time with my family. I mean, my little nieces and nephew are not going be tiny forever, and they will not always be able to visit us here in Tucson. Right now, my sojourn to Denver is looking rather unlikely as well, for I have run into some other problems with my life and the income is just not coming in quick enough for a potential move. Anyway, after really taking a week off and pretty much not doing anything…I know my body needed a good rest.
I hate to admit it, but I have to say that I was exhausted. Not necessarily from the idea of fitness and working out, but just from the complications of life. I mean, I look at the debts I have accrued and the sleepless nights I have had and the lingering head sickness that won’t go away. I ultimately think my body was trying to tell me to take a little vacation from everything, and in a lot of ways, my visiting family was a great reason for this. I went out with my friends and watched a couple movies. I took a cool vegan woman out on a date and so far, she has not ignored me since we went out (so that is a good sign!). I don’t feel constantly hungry and therefore, I don’t feel tempted to eat everything in sight. And the most important aspect I am experiencing today…I truly want to get back into fitness. I haven’t really taken any time off from my fitness in quite a while, for I always feel that I need to stay consistent in my program but after catching up on some sleep and just concentrating on the other parts of my life, I really want to get back into the game and get back quickly. I want to get back on road I was traversing and start eating better (even though I have been fairly good the past week).
Now is there really any good reasons for taking a break from your fitness, even if it is just for a week? Most of the hardcore nuts out there would say that you should never ever take a day off, but usually this can b a touchy subject. In one respect, taking some time off would not necessarily be the biggest problem in your life. http://www.self.com/story/this-is-what-happens-to-your-body-when-you-take-a-break-from-working-out The thing I liked most about this article in particular is it spells out the obvious. Taking a week off will not kill you necessarily. You will not digress into a deep black hole and never be able to crawl out. If anything, the break will help your body get better from any issues you may have been experiencing. For me, the main problem is my right bicep, which has been overworked due to my job and the overuse on my right arm. So to get a little rest with that arm, it was pretty nice to not feel a slight strain by the end of every day. Now of course, this particular website also indicated the alternative to completely taking a week off…short workouts that are typically high intensity and/or low weights. Body Building also believed taking some time off would be good for the recuperative process. https://www.bodybuilding.com/fun/zaino4.htm The best information I liked within this particular article was the recommendation of taking a week off just to do some things you might want to get done, like in my case clean the house or something and get my swamp cooler hooked up again (which I discovered needs some work again. I will have a huge hurdle for me coming in the near future for me though, and it is not just because of the heat index changing here in Tucson. I haven’t run since Ragnar, and who knows when I will take a shot o the track again. Frankly, I have also gotten used to the idea of not running since the pain and agony of the last Ragnar, and the bad taste in my mouth has left me feeling lazy. I say lazy because that is what I am right now with the running…I have no problem admitting it. So what is a guy to do to get that passion back into his life? Well, the first part is to get his but kicked in the gym royally.
While I may have been gone for a week due to some family obligations (which let me remind you, I have absolutely no regrets), this meant I was in for a bad time at the gym with Jenny on Monday. Now Sergeant Meyers likes to tell me that when she is in a good mood, the workout will be much harder. Now this was the sort of thinking I definitely needed, because I needed a good crash course to get the body moving again. We did out typical snatch progressions, discovering that I am certainly much better with out any shoes and socks on. For some reason, with my bare skin touching the floor, I did much better at keeping my feet to the ground and not seeing any lift from my heels. Even with more than a week without any Olympic lifting, I was capable of getting right back into the swing of things, even if Jon wanted me to go down in weight a tiny bit. I think as I get better, that will be a short lived piece of advice (hopefully!). So I did pretty good with the weights I working with, really only having one bad rep out of all the stuff I did, and managed to stay within a good mixture of form and power. But the real test was with the circuit training she forced me through. Knowing my cardio might be a little off, Jenny challenged me to do sets of ten between strength and cardio movements. The first set of torture was me doing Kettle swings, stair climbers, Goblet squats, push-ups and then jump squats. It didn’t get any easier on the second tier of exercises, where she had me do straight air overhead presses with dumbbells, lawnmower rows from each arm and then do some leg lifts and V-ups. As if those things were tough enough, she also wanted me to do burpies, which of course is my least favorite exercise in the world (honestly, does anyone like these). As the burning in my lungs brought me back to life and my sweat indicated the work I put into the workout, I realized then and there that the short vacation I took was over. I felt energized and ready to go again, and I look forward to my workout tonight.
Now of course, the other problem moving forward is what the heck I am going to do with my running. I have now gotten into this bad habit of not running, so getting myself ready to go again will be a little difficult. I’m hoping to try a little something after the workout today, just to shock my body back into the shape of things. I seriously need to get myself back into running, and this will be the week to do it. I do not ever want to have an issue like I had at Ragnar, where I really had to summon up some deep rooted desire just to finish the race. I want to finish like a boss from here on out. It will take some work, but I feel ready and energized to do so.
